Ready to get lost on the Lost Coast

As my body takes a needed day off in Arcata, California, I am finalizing my plans to bike to and to hike the Lost Coast. Here is a brief descrption of what lies ahead:

"California's Lost Coast certainly qualifies as a dramatic landscape. It stretches roughly 80 miles along a rugged, lightly traveled coast, backed by a dozen peaks rising more than 2000 feet, crowned by the 4,087-foot hulk of Kings Peak. Two dozen year-round streams cascade down deep, steep-walled canyons in a landscape so rugged the highway builders just shook their heads and went elsewhere. Of the four roads that reach this wild coast, two are one-lane dirt and all are twisting and steep. Yes, dramatic fits as does remote."

Despite its eye-popping splendor, the inaccessibility of the land locks it into virtual isolation. When Highway 101 turns inward at Legget, it takes with it the majority of auto-propelled tourists. Only the most intrepid of travelers, the ones who can handle not having a major highway or city anywhere nearby, make it to the isolated shores of the Lost Coast. Because of this, the area is ideal for cycling.
